Writing is a solitary profession and book publishing is a stressful business: filled with self-criticism, doubt, fear of failure and frequent rejection. I doubt I would have survived my foray into writing a highly personal memoir without the endless support of my writing partner (who I met at a Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators critique group). Since my eight picture book and one early chapter book manuscripts are currently gathering dust, while I work tirelessly to promote my first memoir Spirit Baby, I thought it was time to join a community of writers of adult fiction and non-fiction. So, I joined the International Women Writers Guild. In addition to being supportive and encouraging, every week a member of the group posts a “freewrite” writing prompt. These freewrite prompts really help to get my creative juices flowing and I hope to respond to as many freewrite prompts as possible and will post them on my blog under “freewrite.” I hope you will enjoy them and possibly be inspired to do your own creative writing!
